When I am Laid in Earth
Spring/Summer 27
Seven looks, one aria.
We showed Spring/Summer 27 in the atrium at Kistefos, where the building meets the forest.
A string quartet played at the centre of the clearing. Dido came out of the trees singing Purcell's When I Am Laid in Earth, two dancers behind her, and went back the way she came.
The collection began with rope. I grew up on Barmen, on my parents' trout farm, where you learned to tie a knot early on. Later, the rope became a print. This season the scarves became clothing: whole squares printed in Italy, handsewn in Norway, never cut to fit. When the drape failed, we unpicked it and began again. The hand-rolled edge became the seam, often in a contrasting colour, left visible.
There are two hands hidden in the rope. They come from the world of Hans Bellmer, whose drawings have followed me since my years at McQueen.
We showed garments. We make scarves. That will not change. The scarf is what everything else is built from.
